Role
Connor Wong opened 2026 as the backup and ended up catching 62 starts before Adley Rutschman arrived and took over the job in August. In 2027 he is the No. 2 catcher, unless the Red Sox trade for a different one. MLB Trade Rumors floated Hunter Feduccia as a target if Boston wants to move on from Wong.
Outlook
The first half was the best stretch of his career: .288/.385/.387 in 134 plate appearances before the All-Star break. After it he hit .172/.212/.303 with 3 walks in 104 plate appearances, which left him at .233/.308/.348 with 4 homers. His defense is the problem for a catcher whose value is supposed to be defense. Runners stole 47 bases off him and he caught 8. Savant had him at about -8 framing runs, with a 1.97-second pop time to second. Trevor Hass of Boston.com called him "a reliable backup who made strides."
Our take: a .656 OPS from your backup is fine. The running game is harder to live with on a team that, in Willson Contreras's words, has "to get better at the running game." We'd keep shopping for a better glove and keep Wong only if nothing turns up.
