Role
Nick Sogard was called up May 16, missed six weeks with a right oblique strain, and stuck once he came back July 29. He started at second, first, third and short, mostly second. For 2027, Curtis Mead is the planned second baseman, so Sogard looks like the infield's top backup.
Outlook
He hit .255/.342/.385 with 5 homers and 31 walks in 277 plate appearances, his best season in the majors. Most of it came after July 29 (.255/.341/.387 in 236 PA). He also hit .269/.410/.437 at Worcester. Savant liked his defense, +3 outs above average at second base (83rd percentile). It didn't like the contact quality, with max exit velocity in the 19th percentile and a .311 expected wOBA. Trevor Hass of Boston.com argued Sogard deserves to be the everyday second baseman.
Our take: he gets on base, switch-hits and catches the ball at four positions. That makes him a useful utility man. We think Mead gets first crack at second, and Sogard ends up with about half a season of starts anyway because somebody on this infield always gets hurt.
