Role
Detroit designated Jahmai Jones for assignment in July after he hit .137 in 57 games, and Boston traded a player to be named later for him on July 14. He played 37 games for the Red Sox, mostly at DH. Nearly every at-bat came against left-handers: 68 of his 76 plate appearances in Boston. He's arbitration-eligible for the first time, with a projected $900,000 salary (MLB Trade Rumors).
Outlook
His Boston numbers were loud: .308/.408/.585 with four homers. Against lefties he had a 1.058 OPS. They also came with a .421 average on balls in play and 23 strikeouts. He faded late, hitting .175 over his last 20 games, and went 0-for-4 in the Wild Card Series. The underlying contact is decent, with a 90.6 mph average exit velocity and a 10.8% barrel rate on the season. In 2025 he had a .937 OPS in 72 games for the Tigers.
Our take: he can't be an everyday player, and against right-handers he went 3-for-25 this year. But a cheap right-handed bat who hits lefties is what this lineup lacks. We think he sticks through spring and gives Boston an .800 OPS against lefties.
