Role
Triston Casas did not play in 2026. He spent the whole season on the injured list, first finishing his recovery from the left patellar tendon repair, then with a left intercostal strain, and then a left wrist that needed arthroscopic surgery on Aug. 6 (per MLB Trade Rumors). Willson Contreras took his job, and nothing about 2027 suggests Casas gets it back.
Outlook
His last game was May 2, 2025, when the knee went. He was hitting .182/.277/.303 in 29 games at that point. The case for him is older: 24 homers and an .857 OPS in 2023, when he was 23. MLB Trade Rumors says he is under arbitration control through 2028 and made $1.61 million this year, so a tender would cost about the same. The club gave no timeline for his return from the wrist surgery.
Our take: Contreras has first base for at least one more year and Casas hasn't swung in a game in 17 months. We think the Red Sox move on this winter, by trade or non-tender, and somebody else takes the cheap chance on his left-handed power.
